Rene's Pictures

This is a picture of a bird looking at the leftover food humans consumed.  In this piece I wanted to convey the idea of consumerism, and how we humans take things for granted.  The world has resources for us to make food to eat, for example, ice tea and burgers.  However, resources on earth are not an endless supply of goods.  We share our environment with animals and plants that have to live with us, yet in this photo it seems as if we think we are the only living species on this planet.  This combination of trash and leftover food is not healthy for this bird.  Humans consume as much as they want, but seem to forget about the bird that’s hiding in the shadows.  I wanted to give the sense that humans are oblivious to the fact that what we leave behind, like trash, has repercussions to the environment.  The bird is in the shadows (background) of our thoughts and comes to eat food it is not meant to eat.  This could kill the bird or make it very sick.  The act of consumerism by humans now has effects on the environment.

Imagine what it was like to have electricity for the first time.  Thomas Edison discovered electricity and used a single light bulb.  Before this happened candles and lanterns were used; now today lights are continuously on throughout the city and homes.  With that observation, in this photo consumerism is the main concept.  How many lights do you have in your home; one in each room?  In this shot there is not just one light bulb shining for just one room, but three light bulbs!  Do we really need to consume this much energy to have a three light bulb arrangement for style?  What happened to using energy as a necessity, not style?

  1. I love that this is such a simple picture with a complex meaning, electricity is used so much and often wasted. This picture shows the greatness of one object. The photo is focuses solely on the light but because it branches out it has great movement, it also has great lighting.

  3. I think this photograph really captures the theme of your blog. The theme is consumption and the photograph is addressing the issue of energy and our unnecessary consumption of energy. I like how the lights are very bright and the central point of the picture, and then the outer edges of the picture are darker.

  4. I love this picture, I also agree from Daniel's comment that it truly represents consumption. The quality of the picture looks professional. Even though the focus is centered, the three lights draw your eyes outward. Overall, it's a very creative piece

  5. The first photo, with the consumed food and bird, is a great depiction of the affect humans have on the world around them. The idea that nature gets the leftovers of what humans consume is very true and also very detrimental to the natural environment. The lighting in this photo allows the gaze to be directed to the consumed food, while the bird sits off to the side of the frame as an onlooker. This is a different perspective of a type of double consumption in the world.

  6. I agree that both of these photographs are the ultimate portrayal of consumption, each in different ways. The common theme between the two is over-consumption specifically, as the first photograph shows overconsumption of food and the second shows overconsumption of electricity and a resource. The first photo shows the way in which we are very unaware of our surroundings at times, and how we affect the world around us such as the bird in the image. The second photo shows how careless we can be with our resources, such as electricity. There are 3 lights in the image, when i'm sure only one was needed, displaying our common over consumption of things in our daily lives.
